Much has been said over the years about The Single Parent household. The percentages that correlate with the poverty rates, which one could associate with education, are apparent and telltale. Education in single parented homes is essential, however, most of these households are at a disadvantage in proportion to those with two-parented ones. When there is but one responsible parent working sometimes two jobs simply to survive, it leaves very little time in the day for the enforcement of rules-let alone homework discussions. So, the "latchkey" child is at a major disadvantage educationally; unless they are well endowed with a responsibility of their own. Education is the one products that is able to help a community progress in a society.
Lev Vygotsky's research of social constructivism supports "that learning and development is a collaborative activity and that children are cognitively developed in the context of socialization and education." (Vygotsky). Within the context of educating children, socialization is a necessary component to properly have children understand their own communities, as well as other communities to be able to have a comparison model from which to learn. With this in mind, most single parented households are not able to sufficiently allow for a child's experiences to reach further than their immediate perimeter. So, with a child unable to have a farther reach than their immediate area leaves them at a disadvantage for a greater social cognitive learning. With an arrested development, standard schooling becomes much more difficult for them at an earlier age than other socially nourished children.
